Rigor in service of the play. Joy in service of the process.

As a director for over 25 years I have been fortunate to direct everything from Greek tragedies to absurdist poetry plays to musicals and everything in between. I have worked closely with playwrights on new plays and reimagined canonical works. I have devised plays in basements and staged raucous regional productions. While the aesthetic of each production changes, my leadership is guided by the same values:

Rigorous commitment to the story we are telling. Joy in the process from the first rehearsal to closing night.

And at the center of it all is creating a meaningful experience for our audience. How we make work matters and I endeavor to facilitate rehearsal rooms and create productions fueled by curiosity, bravery, and kindness so that every collaborator can bring their full self to the process and the performance. As a teacher, my approach remains the same: creating a safe, playful environment for students to take risks and make discoveries.

"She uses a simple but effective set to move the actors around like chess pieces as they dive headlong into his or her character’s erotic fantasies and sexual peccadilloes."

"Shana Gozansky directs with a sharp eye for Pinter’s sly theatrical rhythms, evoking its humor, language, and rituals."

—Tim Jackson, artsfuse

"The actors are the instruments of the orchestra and they give virtuosic performances. Nothing is lost by the choice to forego British accents; in fact, the lack of dialect adds to The Lover's relevance some fifty years after its debut on another continent."

"Gozansky and designers Luke Sutherland (Scenic/Lighting) and Ed Young (Sound) make brilliant use of effects."

—NANCY GROSSMAN, broadwayworld

"In this production, she delivers continuous action — there are no breaks for set changes. Her careful direction keeps the audience engaged the entire time. "

"She draws from the actors such emotion that there were many eruptions of laughter and few dry eyes in the theater."

—kate thrane, daily free press

"The beats are perfectly timed."

"Under Shana Gozansky’s direction, the material builds tension that, time after time, releases into a good long laugh."
